Process:
We formed a group immediately at the start of this project; incidentally, we have noticed, that we were from different cultures originally: a connection we all shared. This became the basis for our group, and we all agreed to find ways of representing our sense of double identity; and the experience of the arrival to (or living in) a country we have perhaps idealised. We thought about the subject of liminality, of art related to borders; the visual language of borders and its controls in reality as in mythology, as well as symbols of national identities. We wanted to find a piece of artwork along these lines. We then explored the concept of a utopia, and I accidentally found the painting we ended up recreating, since I knew how the artist’s works and favoured themes matched our aims.
We struggled to keep to clearly defined roles, preferring to take part in the bigger parts of the project (like building, sawing, textile printing), or else naturally orientate ourselves to the parts of the project we focused our thinking on the most. Also, we all agreed on doing our individual additions: a poster, a character design and a mask each.
I personally liked to oversee most work stages along with Laura (even if from the background), just to keep ourselves to deadlines. My personal little addition was the design and production of all 6 passports for the characters. Also, I have done a lot of research initially, as well as worked on the final publication, which was mostly done by me and Jay design-wise. (Although Judit and Kyle started it’s skeleton version, so credit to them also.)
Reflection:
It honestly surprised me what is possible in such short time, if we bend our minds and hands to it. It worried me, how little energy I have had in the beginning (from the last project), and I have yet less now (due to my long commute as well). Still, I would say we have done our best and it was finished according to plans! I felt inspired by my team mates, their dedication and talent. We somehow found time to do all the required stages of this module, including preliminary research. The tutorials helped us in strengthening our concept, and finalising our vision so it is as coherent as possible, despite deliberately using coded language, and slightly disorientingly rich setting.
