we have lost a wallet, not our way - in Bath

 proposal for mini brief 3

Shared project by the three of us (Laura, Kyle, and Zsuzsanna).

Originally an answer to brief 3 - Getting Lost. We have modified our intent of getting lost based on sound/music due to the unforeseen circumstance of Laura's wallet being stolen on our mock-day during spring break. We spent the whole day tracking the wallet's route (the thief kept trying to use the bank card in various shops).

In the end, we have realised, that this could become the project: using all the evidence of our route, "witness" information and location scouting, along with the drawings (and photos) made of potential culprits. Of course, this had no point in any way, since we cannot make an arrest, nor are we intent on exposing anyone whether guilty or not. Instead, we will try and evidence all events in drawing, to meet the visual essay brief from a slightly unusual approach - roleplaying as old fashioned detectives, but instead of photographic evidence, we collect hand drawn ones.

Perhaps, the change of medium exposes the difference between the personal, experiential nature of drawing, and the official, cold approach of a photograph as a form of evidence, the same way chasing a stolen wallet feels like a personal (emotionally invested) quest, while the act of methodically following clues is impersonal, forcibly rational.

My initial ideas for the final outcome:

  • A, One- page zine;
Side A
Side A(cont.)
Side B
Prototype
Pros:
In scale and size same as the wallet: fits in a card holder case.
Easily reproduced.

Cons:
Does not fit the brief; too focused on narrative storytelling.

  • B, Mini-zine
Wireframe
Fold out map

Pros:
Small booklet.
Same size as a cardholder case: the cover design is to evoke the lost cardholder case.
The most minimalistic – mainly suspect portraits (imagined and real).
Little information given, or in a less obvious way; most of which is on the fold-out map.

Cons:
Too minimalistic; more like a mini-project.

  • C, Case-file
Wireframe
Wireframe (cont.)

Pros:
A thicker book, with many pages.
More speculative, evidence based.
Lots of suspect drawings.
Playful; detective-work role-play.

Cons:
Needs co-ordination of all 3 creator's input.

We are going ahead with C, option as discussed in subsequent tutorials.
